Introduction

 

The Akebu language group of Togo and call themselves Kǝkpǝǝ-kǝ. They have a population of over 70,300 (Gblem-Poidi and Kantcha 2012) and reside in the Plateaux region: Agou and Wawa prefectures east of Ghana, mostly Djon, Kamina, Kougnohou, Sérégbéné, and Yala.

The language is classified as Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Kwa, Left Bank, Kebu-Animere. The ISO code is keu. Alternate names for the group are Akebou, Akébou, Ekpeebhe, Ekpeebhibhe, Gakagba, Kabu, Kebu, Kegberike, Kébou, kekpeerike

The Akebu value their language and members of all ages use it in all domains except government, education and with outsiders. The mother-tongue speakers of Akebu also use French, Gen and Éwé. Gen and Éwé are used in the church and in market places. There are radio programs in Akebu in the region. Bible portions were done in 2010-2015.

There are primary and secondary schools in the region. Many children are being educated in French.
