Introduction

Manipuri /mənipuri/ (also Meiteilon /məitəilon/ and Meeteilon /mìtəilòn/) is a Sino-Tibetan language and the predominant language and lingua franca in the southeastern Himalayan state of Manipur in northeastern India spoken by three million people. The official language in government offices of the state, this language is also spoken in Meitei-inhabiting parts of the Indian states of Assam and Tripura and also in the neighboring countries of Burma (Myanmar) and Bangladesh. It is currently classified as a vulnerable language by the UNESCO.

Manipuri is a tonal language whose exact classification remains unclear. The Manipuri Dictionary Project (MD Project) team is also working along this line.
