Introduction

The Pyam [pym] language of Nigeria is spoken by roughly 3,000 people in Mangu LGA of Plateau State in central Nigeria. The majority of the younger people in the community have shifted to using Hausa and English, and no longer speak Pyam, although efforts are underway to revitalize the use of the language.

The language is classified as: Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Plateau, Southeastern, and has also been referred to as Fyam, Fyem and Pyem. It is most closely related to Horom [hoe].
