Introduction

 

The Samo people of Papua New Guinea have a population of about 900 (2001 SIL). The ISO code is smq. The linguistic classification of the language is Trans-New Guinea, East Strickland. Alternate names for the group are Daba, Nomad, and Supei.

The Samo region is in the Western province: Lake Murray district, south Upper Strickland census district, east of Strickland river, north of Nomad.

The Samo language is taught in primary schools. Some Samo of various ages also speak Hiri Motu and Tok Pisin. The literacy rate in these other languages is higher than that of their mother tongue.
