Introduction

 

Yambeta is a language of Cameroon spoken by around 6,000 people. They are located in the Centre region: in the Kon-Yambeta subdivision.

This language is classified as Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Northwest, A, Basaa (A.462). The ISO code is [yat]. Other names to refer to the language are Njambeta or Yambetta. There are two dialects of Yambeta: Nedek (Begi-Nibum, Kibum), and Nigii (Nigi).

Most adults and some young people use Yambeta to communicate in various settings. Speakers of Dimbong and Tuotomb also learn Yambeta. Yambeta speakers also learn French. Yambeta is taught in primary schools or as a subject in a few schools.
