Introduction

If you hear the words Bedere, Bidire, Gadre, Gidere, or Adele, each is referring to the Gidire (preferred by the people themselves) of Togo and Ghana. This ethnic group has a population of 37,400, with 26,400 in the Centrale region and Sotouboua prefecture of Togo. Some of the people live in Ghana.

The language is classified as Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Kwa, Nyo, Potou-Tano, Basila-Adele. The dialect called Upper Adele has minor differences in tone and lexicon. The dialects of Ghana and Togo also differ. Most Adele speakers also speak Éwé. French is the official language of Togo and English is the official language of Ghana.
