Word Category Abbreviations
Here is a list of all word category abbreviations in the dictionary, and what they mean:
adj | adjective | describes a following noun |
adv | adverb | describes a verb |
clas | classifier | makes a new noun from a noun or other word category |
con | connector | joins clauses, phrases or sentences |
dem | demonstrative | points to or shows which noun is talked about |
der | derivational word | makes a new noun from a noun or other word category |
ind | indefinite | shows a noun introduced for the first time |
mod | modifier | describes a noun before the equal sign verb na ‘is, be’ |
n | noun | a person, animal, place, thing, or idea |
num | number | tells how many of a noun there are |
part | particle | word or affix that has a special use |
prep | preposition | introduces a noun phrase that describes a previous action |
pron.o | pronoun after preposition | takes the place of a noun after apreposition |
pron.pos.a | distant (alienable) possessive pronoun | takes the place of a possessor noun possessing a detachable noun |
pron.pos.ia | close (inalienable) possessive pronoun | takes the place of a possessor noun possessing a body part or relative |
pron.rf | reflexive pronoun | takes the place of a noun that does and receives the action |
pron.s/o | pronoun | a pronoun before or following a verb that takes the place of a noun subject or object |
quan | quantity | describes the amount of a noun |
ques | question word | asks a question |
v.d | detransitive verb | a transitive or intransitive verb used as an intransitive verb |
v.i | intranstive verb | a verb that does not have an object |
v.t | transitive verb | a verb that can have an object |
Note: In the English definitions all references to he, him, his etc. should also be taken to refer to she, her, hers etc.
