Multilingual Setup

For visitors (to a Webonary site) to be able to view the web pages in more than one language, the plugin qTranslate X, under Plugins on the Webonary Dashboard will need to be activated. If the Webonary site was created from an existing multi-lingual template, qTranslate X is already activated and nothing further need be done.

What does qTranslate X do?

  • It shows the links for the user to switch to another interface language.
  • When you create a page under “Pages” you will be able to create separate pages for each language you added.
  • After you have imported your data into WordPress, you will have dropdown menus available for “Languages”, “Parts of speech”, etc.

The export from FLEX only exports these taxonomies in English. You can provide a translation by clicking onto “Posts” in the Admin-Area and then on one of the categories.

Setting Up Instructions:

After you have activated the plugin, go to “Settings”:

  • “Languages”.
  • Add all the languages you wish to support
  • Set the default language
  • Click on “Advanced Settings” and select “Use Query Mode (?lang=en)”

Go to the webpage. You should be able to see links at the top of the page which allows the user to switch to the languages you added.

If the internal translations don’t yet exist for your language, please download this Excel file and fill out the translations in column B. After you send us the Excel file, we’ll create the po-files, for the webonary plugin and theme.

For translating pages, go to “Pages”. You will see the title textfield and a language tab above the text for your activated languages.

The title corresponds to the menu item, so normally you don’t need to translate the menu items separately. But in some cases where there is no page for the menu (just a link, for example “Link to Ethnologue”), you will need to go to Appearance – Menus and edit the item manually. To edit a menu item, click on the small arrow on the item and change the textfield “Navigation Label” and use the language codes, e.g. <!–:fr–>Lien vers Ethnologue<!–:–><!–:en–>Link to Ethnologue<!–:–>

Don’t forget to click on the button “Save Menu”.
