Grammar

While many languages have tone markings on syllables or tone bearing units, which cause distinctions in meaning from one word to another, Mpyemo has an intricate tonal system on the verbs and their affixes. In Mpyemo there are two base tones, low and high, and in addition, morphological tone changes such as high tone docking, high tone spreading, high tone raising. and final falling contour. Tone also plays a role in grammatical elements such as imperative verbs, nominalized verbs, inflectional prefixes, and verbal auxiliaries.
