Introduction

 

The Turka (Tchourama) language of Burkina Faso is spoken by over 37,000 speakers in the Cascades region: Comoe province north and west of Banfora; Leraba province; Hauts-Bassins region: Houet and Kenedougou provinces; principal villages are dialect names.

The language is classified as Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, North, Gur, Central, Southern, Kirma-Tyurama. The ISO code is [tuz]. There are two dialects: Douna and Beregadougou-Toumousseni.

The Tchouraba highly value their language. They also speak the trade language Jula [dyu].
