Introduction

 

The Tobilung language is spoken by about 4000 people living in the Sabah region of Malaysia. They reside in Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, and Kudat districts; Kota Kinabalu, Inanam and other towns. The total number of speakers is around 10,000. Tobilung is classied as: Austronesian, Malayo-Polynesian, North Borneo, Sabahan, Dusunic, Dusun. The ISO code is [tgb].

Language use is stronger in villages in the interior of the region. Half of the children are learning the language or using it at home. There are videos and literature in Tobilung. Those who can read and write in standard Malay can often write in Tobilung.
