The Gwama language is spoken by approximately 15,000 people in western Ethiopia, close to the border with Sudan. The specific location is South Benishangul-Gumuz and western Oromia regions, south of Asosa to Gidami, in 19 villages, including Yabus in Sudan.

Alternate names for the people or the language include: Afan Mao, Amam, Gogwama, Goma, Gwama, Koma of Asosa, Nokanoka, North Koma, Takwama, and T’wa Kwama.

The classification of the language is Nilo-Saharan, Satellite-Core, Core, Koman.

Pilot classes in Gwama were started in 2014 in some government schools. The Latin script was used since 2013.
