Introduction

This online dictionary is a fully digitalized version of a manuscript dated 1703 in the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. It contains a dictionary of more than eleven thousand headwords in Latin together with glosses in Hindustani/Hindi in Devanagari script as well as transliteration, French and in some cases Perso-Arabic glosses (about 850). Besides the word lists that form part of Johan Josua Ketelaars Hindustani grammar of 1698, this is, historically, the first dictionary of the language that nowadays goes under the name of Hindi and is the “official language” of the Indian Union. The data from the 490+422 pages of the manuscript materials are fully searchable in their original spellings as well as in a modern standardized orthography, if the modern languages contain these glosses in Latin, Hindi and French.
