danum surveynsurvey of the water situation. In regard to the water situation in most highland areas of the Palawano people of the Philippines, the most common set up is a 2 inch galvanized pipe pipeline running from an open stream source up on the mountain. Sometimes there is a rock and sand filter at the intake, and many times no filter of any kind. Water is transported by gravity through the pipes to a 10 foot square concrete collection tank near or in the center of the main village. The tank usually becomes a home for small frogs, lizards, and crabs that get into the pipeline, or crawl thought the vent or access lid cracks. Knowing this, once a month or so some of the village men will go inside the tank and clean out as many critters and sludge sediment they can. It's not a very thorough cleaning, but they do what they can. *Unfortunately, the most of local people now consider the water tank and the water coming out to be "clean". It isn't, and many suffer from diarrhea, amoeba, stomach aches, and occasionally cholera [killed 35+ last year]. *Those Palawanos who understand the problem go directly to the river to get their water, and look for a spring coming out of the mountain side to fill their bamboo tube or plastic jug. This is the traditional way of getting water, before progress arrived. Personally, we collected the spring water and then ran it through a Katadyne filter into a water jug for our drinking and cooking water.; dq: Dale Duhe, SIL 2011.
